Stolen UK Caravans Recovered from Poland with NCC, VIN Chip And CRiS Support

19, March 2026

The successful return of stolen caravans from Poland highlights the strength of collaboration between UK law enforcement and the leisure vehicle industry. As part of the NCC Group, our VIN Chip and CRiS (Central Registration & Identification Scheme) registration services provide essential security and traceability for leisure vehicles.

“This initial recovery of stolen caravans demonstrates how our approach, aids law enforcement, and helps reduce the impact of theft. We are very pleased to play a role in returning these vehicles safely to their owners," said Vince Wise, Director – Leisure Vehicle & Holiday Parks Security, NCC.

Stolen Property Successfully Returned To The UK

Press release issued by Cheshire Constabulary Rural Crime Team:

In March 2023, Cheshire Constabulary Rural Crime Team began a complex investigation into a series of high value caravan thefts across the UK. As a result of this work, six suspects were charged at the end of 2024 and are awaiting trial.

During the investigation, information developed by the team was shared with Polish Law Enforcement through Europol. Acting on this intelligence, Polish law enforcement launched their own investigation which led to several caravans stolen from the UK being located and recovered in Poland.

The process of returning stolen property from overseas is administratively complex, we have continued to work closely with the National Caravan Council (NCC), who have tirelessly coordinated the required documentation and logistics. We are pleased to confirm that, after a lengthy process, the first three caravans have now arrived back home in the UK.

While many of the recovered caravans are now owned by insurance companies, returning stolen goods helps reduce the overall cost of crime and, in the long term, supports efforts to minimise the impact of theft on insurance premiums.

We also hope this sends a clear message to those involved in organised criminality: moving stolen goods overseas does not make them disappear. UK Law Enforcement have effective channels of communication with overseas law enforcement agencies, and we will continue to use them to identify offenders and recover stolen property wherever it may be taken.

As criminal proceedings remain ongoing in both the UK and Poland, we are limited in what we can say at this time. However, we hope to see further stolen caravans returned in due course.

Our thanks go to the NCC for their sustained support with this investigation and for their coordination of the recovery process.

It is recommended you protect your leisure vehicle today, ensure it is forensically security marked with VIN Chip and registered on the CRiS database for the best security and traceability.

The Central Registration & Identification Scheme (CRiS)  (cris.co.uk)

CRiS is the UK’s national register for touring caravans, providing two key services: official caravan registration, similar to the DVLA for cars, and unique VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) identification. Recognised by regulators, insurance companies, and UK police forces, CRiS helps protect registered keepers, prevent fraud, and support the recovery of stolen vehicles.

All touring caravans manufactured since 1992 by NCC members are recorded on the CRiS database, using a unique 17-digit VIN and detailed caravan description.

VIN Chip (
vinchip.co.uk)

VIN Chip is a forensic security marking system designed to deter theft and facilitate rapid detection and recovery of stolen leisure vehicles by the police. Introduced in 2015, the system combines tamper-evident identification labels, an embedded RFID chip and thousands of uniquely coded microdots suspended in UV adhesive, linking the vehicle to a secure database managed by the Central Registration & Identification Scheme (CRiS).

VIN Chip is part of the Secured by Design initiative and recognised as a Police Preferred Specification product. It has been fitted as standard on all UK NCC member manufacturer touring caravans since 2016 and can also be retrofitted to earlier models.

VIN Chip systems may vary depending on the level of protection selected. A motorhome system is also available. Further information: cris.co.uk/vin-chip.
