What is an NCC Approved caravan, motorhome, campervan, holiday caravan, or residential park home?

The NCC Badge of Approval on the outside of a touring caravan, motorhome, campervan, holiday caravan, or residential park home, with the certificate in the user's handbook, is recognised throughout the industry and is proof of a manufacturer's commitment to the safety of its products and its customers.

   .

When you choose a motorhome, campervan, touring caravan, holiday caravan or park home from an NCC Approved Manufacturer, it is:

■ Independently inspected at the factory, with up to 500 checks

■ Compliant with UK and European safety standards

■ (Motorhomes and campervans only) Legally type-approved and registered as a ‘motor caravan’ (not a ‘van’) by the DVLA. That means it is recorded as a M1SA (code for motor caravan) on its V5 – the logbook

Inspections are conducted on-site at a manufacturer's premises and depending upon specification, there may be 500 to 600 individual points checked on any one unit. This inspection process is complemented by surveillance audits at the factory to ensure that the products continue to comply with the relevant criteria. As such, the badge provides a reliable benchmark by which product liability can be measured.

This badge is your assurance from the NCC – the UK’s trade body for the industry – that the touring caravan, motorhome, holiday caravan, park home or campervan you’re buying is legally type-approved (where applicable) and compliant with all relevant British and European safety standards.

Every approved manufacturer undergoes regular inspections by expert NCC assessors, who carry out up to 500 checks on a single model. A manufacturer must pass three consecutive formal inspections, followed by ongoing unannounced visits. This process ensures any potential safety critical issues are quickly identified and corrected.

What the checks include:

Type Approval (for motorised vehicles only) – confirming compliance with road safety legislation

Gas and electrical safety – making sure installations on models are tested, secure, and fit for purpose

Verifying escape routes and ventilation

Appliance safety to ensure all fitted appliances are suitable and correctly installed

Built to standards you can trust

Approved touring caravans carry the BS EN 1645 badge, while motorhomes and campervans display the BS EN 1646 badge. Holiday caravans carry the BS EN 1647 badge. These inspections confirm the manufacturer produces vehicles that meet strict British and European Standards – designed to keep you, your family, your guests, your passengers, and other road users safe.
